Nike designer Natalie Candrian describes the idea behind Sharapova’s 2009 Roland-Garros dress in her own portfolio: variations in blue were chosen to stand out against the orange clay. Diagonal lines and bias construction gave the fabric room to lift away from the body during movement, while the slanting composition emphasized Sharapova’s height.
The result reads differently at rest and in play. Its overlapping panels form a composed blue silhouette when still, then separate into a flowing, uneven hem as she moves. Candrian’s original sketch and tournament photographs document the design. Both the front and rear archive views use those references to preserve the direction of the layers and the distinctive construction.
