Victorian lace in miniature

The story behind the look

Pericoli presented this Victorian-inspired tennis outfit by Ted Tinling at the Hurlingham Club fashion show on 21 June 1970. Its high neckline and elaborate lace trim borrowed the decorative vocabulary of historical dress, compressed into a short tennis silhouette.

Concentric ruffles spread across the chest above a fitted lace torso. Closely spaced flounces repeat around the skirt. A colour photograph from the same summer shows pink fabric and white lace, supporting the palette used in the reconstruction.
