The story behind the look

Venus Williams arrived for her third-round match against Mandy Minella in a black dress that treated the US Open night session as its own occasion. She designed the look herself, using sweeping sparkles to evoke fireworks over New York. Williams explained that the idea celebrated playing at home, enjoying her work and bringing a sense of fun onto court. She won the match 6–2, 6–1.

The design belongs to her EleVen label, with a sheer outer shell worn over sports layers. Its silver and gold trails make the entire outfit read as a continuous composition, extending onto the shorts beneath. A red daytime version followed later in the tournament; this entry records the black September 3 look, a distinctive example of an athlete shaping both her performance and her presentation.
