The story behind the look

For the 2009 US Open, Sharapova’s Nike night dress drew its inspiration from the New York City skyline. Asymmetric silver bands crossed the dark fabric, while a mesh cut-out brought an open space into the angular design. It was a strikingly different treatment from the softer daytime colourway.

Sharapova wore the black-and-silver look for her opening match against Tsvetana Pironkova on September 1. The dress was part of her sequence of specially designed New York evening looks. Frank Gehry’s contribution belonged to the accompanying Tiffany earrings; the competition garment itself was a Nike design.
