The story behind the look

Sharapova’s black night-match dress drew on Audrey Hepburn and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. A crystal-trimmed neckline gave a restrained athletic silhouette the feeling of eveningwear, while its construction allowed her to compete.

Nike credits Martin Lotti with the original design. Sharapova won the 2006 US Open in it, giving the little black tennis dress a place in both fashion memory and the tournament’s history.
