The babydoll serve
A raised waist and gathered skirt bring mod proportions to matchwear.
The story behind the look
Williams brought a babydoll silhouette to the 2007 US Open: a black Nike dress with a contrasting pink band and a removable pink bow. She took off the bow during her opening match against Angelique Kerber; this photograph shows the dress without it.
In her first-round press conference, Williams described the direction as young and fun, with a mod influence and references to the 1950s and 1960s. The lifted waist changes the proportions of a tennis dress, releasing the skirt above the natural waist.
