For her first Grand Slam appearance after becoming a mother, Osaka wore a custom black Nike dress with iridescent snakeskin panels. A curved white stripe crossed the waist and continued down the skirt, picking out the dress’s asymmetric construction.
She faced Caroline Garcia at Rod Laver Arena on 15 January. The performance dress sat beneath a cropped gold entrance jacket; this reconstruction isolates the black playing garment so its shifting purple, green and blue surface can be compared with the photograph.
