The first Wimbledon collar
Pinstripes and a navy sailor collar for a first major title.
The story behind the look
Fine vertical stripes run beneath an oversized navy collar, edged in white and marked with an M. A line of dark buttons continues down the front of the sleeveless dress.
Navratilova won her first Wimbledon singles title, and first major singles title, in 1978. The Tennis Hall of Fame documents the design with an archival photograph and a replacement dress made by Ted Tinling. That replacement, rather than an original match-worn garment, supplies the clearer construction reference here.
