The story behind the look

Moran asked Wimbledon host and designer Ted Tinling for a colourful outfit, but the all-white rule limited the palette. Tinling put the surprise underneath instead: satin shorts finished with scalloped lace, visible whenever Moran moved.

The flashes of lace provoked international attention and established both Moran and Tinling in tennis-fashion history. The look was unusual not because it abandoned Wimbledon white, but because it made an undergarment part of the performance.
