Althea Gibson · 1957
The whites that made history
A cotton blouse and pleated skirt, preserved from a landmark Wimbledon victory.
The story behind the look
Gibson became the first Black player to win a Wimbledon singles title in 1957. Her outfit survives in the Smithsonian: a cotton polo blouse with a two-button collar, tucked into a pleated linen skirt.
The details are spare: an embroidered chest wreath, broad belt loops and carefully pressed pleats. Its importance comes from the woman who wore it and the barrier she broke. Gibson donated the outfit herself; the museum record does not name its maker.
