The story behind the look

New Balance looked to New York’s Garment District for Gauff’s custom US Open wardrobe. The navy competition dress used a long fitted bodice and an angled, ruffled skirt to give its otherwise restrained colour a distinctive shape.

Gauff wore this navy version against Zeynep Sönmez in the first round. The lower-back opening is documented in New Balance’s garment photographs; fine seams and on-body drape in the reconstruction remain approximate.
