Flowers around the hem

Flower motifs framed the neckline and hem of a dropped-waist white dress.

The story behind the look

The International Tennis Hall of Fame identifies this Ted Tinling dress as one Maria Bueno wore at Wimbledon in 1964. Its decoration is visible from the front: flower-shaped motifs fall around the neckline and repeat along the hem. It is a separate design from the pink-lined 1962 dress elsewhere in the archive.

A low skirt seam extends the smooth bodice before releasing into a short flare. The museum object, donated by Bueno, guides the reconstruction. The photograph does not reveal the rear, so the back view interprets its construction conservatively.
