Tracy Austin · 1977

The gingham debut

Red gingham, eyelet trim and a small pocket brought a pinafore to the US Open.

The story behind the look

Tracy Austin made her US Open debut in 1977, aged fourteen. Her pinafore was made by Little Miss Tennis, the label founded by Marilyn Kosten. The International Tennis Hall of Fame preserves the red gingham garment alongside a Richard Pilling photograph of Austin wearing it at that year’s tournament.

The square lace-edged bib, tiny bow and patch pocket borrow from everyday pinafores rather than conventional sports uniforms. Small red-and-white checks continue across the bodice and skirt. The museum object provides the colour reference that the black-and-white match photograph cannot supply; the rear remains an inferred reconstruction.
